Compare text ยท find the differences
Paste the text before and after editing. Changed lines are found, and the characters that changed inside them are highlighted.
๐ What you type is never sent anywhereTo tidy blank or duplicate lines before comparing, use clean up text. To check the length of the edited text, use the character counter.
Why the texts you compare should not be uploaded
Two versions of a text usually get compared because the text matters: a contract that came back from the other side, a report draft, a proposal, a cover letter, a configuration file. You want to know what changed since last time, or what went missing in your edit. Most online diff tools post both texts to a server to do that. This page compares them inside your browser only. It keeps working with the internet disconnected, nothing is stored on your device, and a refresh clears both boxes.
How to read the result
Red line โ present only in the original (removed).
Green line โ present only in the revision (added).
Colour on both sides โ the same line was edited; the darker highlight marks the characters that actually changed.
"โฆ n lines unchanged โฆ" โ unchanged text folded away. Switch off "Show only changed areas" to expand everything.
Frequently asked questions
Is the text sent to a server?
No. The comparison runs entirely in your browser and the text is never transmitted. Proof: load the page, go offline, and it still works. Nothing is saved either, so reloading clears it.
Can I compare Word, Google Docs or PDF files directly?
Not as files โ those formats mix text with formatting. Open the document, select all, copy and paste it here. Plain-text files such as .txt, .csv, .md, .json, .srt subtitles or source code can be opened with "Load a file" or dropped onto a box.
Everything shows as changed when only the line breaks differ
Lines are matched one to one. If one version wraps a paragraph onto several lines and the other keeps it on one, they look like different lines. Paste both in the same shape. Differences between Windows and Mac line endings (CRLF/LF) and a trailing newline are ignored automatically.
Can I ignore whitespace-only edits?
Turn on "Ignore whitespace". Leading and trailing spaces are dropped and runs of spaces count as one. A space that appears or disappears inside a word still counts as a change, because it may change the meaning.
How long can the texts be?
Tens of thousands of lines. Identical text at the start and end is stripped first and only the differing middle is computed. If the two texts are almost entirely different โ thousands of differing lines โ the comparison stops and tells you, since at that point they are simply different documents.
How do I put the result in an email or report?
"Copy result" copies the changed lines with two lines of context, marked - for removed and + for added, as plain text you can paste anywhere.
