When to use it

A mailing list assembled from several places with the same address several times; a comma-separated list that should be one item per line; values copied out of a spreadsheet with stray spaces around them. Because everything happens in your browser, it is fine to use on customer lists and other data you would not paste into a random website.

Invisible spaces ruin lists

Text copied from web pages and PDFs often carries characters that look like a space but are not one. They look identical on screen, yet a spreadsheet search cannot find them, duplicates survive deduplication, and sorting comes out in a strange order. Trim spaces removes those special spaces as well as ordinary ones.

That is why a pasted list is best cleaned in this order: trim โ†’ remove blank lines โ†’ remove duplicates โ†’ sort. Only after trimming do two equal values compare as equal. The defaults are set up in that order.

Frequently asked questions

Is deduplication case-sensitive?

Yes. Apple and apple are different lines. To treat them as the same, choose "All lower case" first and then remove duplicates.

Is the original order kept?

With sorting set to "Leave as is", the first occurrence of each line stays where it was and only the later repeats are removed.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. It is processed in your browser only and disappears when you close the tab. Nothing is sent to a server.

How large a list can it handle?

Tens of thousands of lines without trouble. Much larger lists may make the browser pause for a moment.
